For three days, October 27-30, 2005, at a beautiful resort in the desert with
a lovely view of the Santa Catalina mountains, the 40th Annual Meeting of the
American Academy of Environmental Medicine was held in Tucson, Arizona. The
speakers presented the cancer legacy of the industrial revolution. Following
is a brief summary of some of the superb lectures.

" . . . over 90% of cancers are induced by environmental carcinogens*. 2004 statistics indicate that the lifetime risk of males to develop cancer is one out of two, and for females, one out of three. In 2002 cancer became a bigger killer of all Americans under age 85 than heart disease."
 Global
  Overview of Carcinogenic Exposures
by Independent Marine Scientist Douglas B. Seba, PhD, who led off the meetings.
  He stated:
The American Cancer Society estimates that over 90% of cancers are induced by environmental carcinogens*. 2004 statistics indicate that the lifetime risk of males to develop cancer is one out of two, and for females, one out of three. In 2002 cancer became a bigger killer of all Americans under age 85 than heart disease. The scope of exposures is truly immense and represented by, not only the complex chemical milieu from industrial, domestic, and commercial sources, but also through air, water, and food sources. Also included in this mix are hormone-like compounds, mycotoxins, microbial agents, genetically altered foods, nuclear radiation, and electromagnetic exposure, to name just a few. This pervasive exposure to carcinogens has become pandemic in nature.
Dr. Seba had spectacular maps and NAS pictures of dust storms quickly spreading from the Sahara to Florida and the rest of the United States. Problems from chemical and biological exposures are worldwide. We know of the arctic polar bears, who cannot reproduce, and, of course, the awful spread of radioactivity from Chernobyl.
Plastic has become ubiquitous. We see it everywhere. "Millions of metric tons are produced each year." The oceans are afloat with microscopic particles of plastic. It is often ground down and it also comes from so-called "biodegradable" plastic, which is made mostly from corn but contains plastic particles. For instance, major problems with male genitalia are created by phthalates from plastic. In a study of 85 males, whose mothers, in their third trimester, had high average phthalates in their urine, in terms of the Center for Disease Control range for urine phthalates, the sons were many more times likely to have "smaller penises and scrota, undescended testicles, and reduced anogenital distance [plus] late puberty, infertility, and testicular cancer."
Dr. Seba dealt, at length, with Florida because people there have the second highest cancer rate in the United States; not only the gross rate but, for children it is up 20% above the U.S. rate: "3 new children's cancers per day." Huge amounts of pesticides are used there, for example, for mosquito abatement.
Florida [has] the second highest cancer rate in the United States . . . for children it is up 20% above the U.S. rate: "3 new children's cancers per day." Huge amounts of pesticides are used there, for example, for mosquito abatement.
Dr. Seba recommended several books, including CANCER-GATE: How to Win the Losing Cancer War by NOHA Professional Advisory Board Member Samuel S. Epstein, MD, (See the lead article by Dr. Epstein in NOHA NEWS, Fall, 2005. read).
One dramatic slide showed a gun: "GENETICS LOADS THE GUN, BUT THE ENVIRONMENT PULLS THE TRIGGER."
*According to The American Cancer Society (Cancer Facts and Figures 2005), "All cancers result from the malfunction of genes. About 5% to 10% of all cancers are clearly hereditary. . . . The remainder of cancers is not hereditary, but result from damage to genes (mutations) that occurs throughout one's lifetime, either due to internal factors, such as hormones or the digestion of nutrients within cells, or external factors, such as tobacco, chemicals, and sunlight."
The Impact of
Early Environmental Chemical Exposure on Carcinogenesis
by Linda S. Birnbaum, PhD, Director, Experimental Toxicology Division, US EPA,
who began by pointing out vividly that children are not tiny adults. They:
MORE EXPOSURE
Children's Bodies May Absorb More
  Toxicants

Children's Brain and Organs May
  Receive Disproportionately More Contaminants

GREATER DOSE
Dr. Birnbaum pointed out the many prenatal and post natal sensitive periods for the initiation of cancer and also a large window of susceptibility for malformations of the brain and then shorter windows for abnormalities of the eyes, skull, and skeleton and later, around birth, of the ears.
[The] average newborn consumption of formula is 6 oz/kg body weight [which is] equivalent to an adult drinking 35 soda cans per day . . .
Dr. Birnbaum dealt with work-related exposures, including "paternal exposures due to motor vehicle-related occupations." She mentioned increased risks from all solvents together, as well as particular ones, and stated that there is "biological plausibility [for] the role of maternal exposure to solvents."
[Many connections exist between prenatal exposures and childhood diseases.] Clear evidence connect[s] ionizing radiation and childhood cancer . . . . [Other suggestive connections include]: cancers [from] parental smoking [and] leukemia [from] parental pesticide exposure. Dr. Birnbaum dealt with work-related exposures, including "paternal exposures due to motor vehicle-related occupations." She mentioned increased risks from all solvents together, as well as particular ones. . . .
With many references on research, including her own, she covered endocrine disruptors, especially the dioxins. We know that "TCDD [a dioxin] is a Known Human Carcinogen." Like Dr. Seba, she mentioned genetic abnormalities as "potential factors in childhood cancers;" others being "UV radiation, viral infections, certain medications, tobacco, alcohol, industrial and agricultural chemicals." In conclusion, she stated: "Thanks to all of my colleagues, students, and friends worldwide who have helped me to see the big picture . . . ."
Genetically Modified Foods

by Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director: Institute for Responsible Technology and
author of Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About
the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You Are Eating. Jeffrey Smith
has spoken worldwide on known problems with genetic modification and the failures
to do follow up research. Not only did he speak in Tucson but he also gave an
authoritative and stimulating NOHA lecture on October 16, 2005.
. . . scientists had warned that GM foods in general might create unpredicted allergies, toxins, antibiotic resistant diseases, and nutritional problems. . . . But the scientists' warnings were ignored by FDA political appointees, including a former Monsanto lawyer who later became Vice President.
Internal FDA memos made public from a lawsuit reveal agency scientists had warned that GM foods in general might create unpredicted allergies, toxins, antibiotic resistant diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged their superiors to require long-term safety testing to catch these hard-to-detect side effects. But the scientists' warnings were ignored by FDA political appointees, including a former Monsanto lawyer who later became Vice President. The FDA does not require safety studies. Instead, if the makers of GM foods claim they are safe, the FDA has no further questions.
Research on GM foods has been suppressed. There are less than 20 peer-reviewed animal GM studies in total! To understand what is going on, we must examine a wide range of evidence.
This is just one of many examples where industry manipulation and political collusion - not sound science - has set the agenda in favor of GM Foods. For example:
Research on GM foods has been suppressed. There are less than 20 peer-reviewed animal GM studies in total! To understand what is going on, we must examine a wide range of evidence. There are basically two popular methods for creating GM crops which involve gene insertion into DNA. Here are many of the potentially harmful effects:
I Gene Insertion disrupts the
DNA and can create unpredictable health problems:

II The foreign protein may be
  different than what is intended:

III Transfer of genes to gut bacteria,
  internal organs, or viruses

IV Other health considerations:

V Evidence from animal studies
  and reports:

VI Evidence of Human Harm
As was briefly outlined in the first section on political collusion and industry
manipulation in favor of GM foods, in the 1980s one hundred people were killed
and another five to ten thousand fell sick from a GM supplement of L-tryptophan.
Industry attempted to explain it by the reduction of carbon in filter systems,
but hundreds of people got the disease from contaminated batches of GM bacteria
produced four years before the filter system changed. No change in regulation
would protect the public if that deadly GM batch of L-tryptophan were produced
today. The only reason doctors were able to identify that epidemic, was because
the disease it created was so rare, acute, and fast acting. If all three of
these characteristics were not in place, it might still be on the market.
Current crops, foods, products, and
ingredients in the US that may contain GMOs:

Non-food items with GMOs include:
cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and bubble baths.

Mycotoxins and
  Cancer
by Michael Gray, MD, MPH, Internal and Occupational Medicine, Emergency Medicine,
and Toxicology, who described several, specific molds (fungi) and the toxins
they produce (mycotoxins), which are known to be human carcinogens and are involved
both in the initiation and the promotion of cancer. Dr. Gray states that "health
based standards require zero tolerance for exposure to mutagens and carcinogens."

A Mayo Clinic Study cites molds (fungi) as "the cause of most of the chronic sinus infections that inflict 37 million Americans each year. Recent studies also link molds to the soaring asthma rate."
Many workers or residents of more modern "tight" buildingswhere no windows can be openedhave exhibited symptoms in the building which are relieved when they leave the building. This has come to be known as "sick building syndrome."
In 1981, then Secretary of State Alexander Haig of the United States accused the Soviet Union of attacking Hmong tribesmen in Laos and Kampuchea with a mysterious new chemical warfare agent, thereby violating the 1972 Biological Warfare Convention.
The tribesmen's symptoms were those
that can be caused by exposure to trichothecenes, although actually different
toxins were found when leaf samples from Kampuchea were analyzed at the University
of Minnesota. Interestingly, the mycotoxins found "did not occur naturally
in Southeast Asia. The purported chemical warfare agent came to be known as
  yellow rain."

Indoor mold and allergies come from (1) dirty air conditioning vents, (2) dust from remodeling, and (3) interior water damage. Many workers or residents of more modern "tight" buildingswhere no windows can be openedhave exhibited symptoms in the building which are relieved when they leave the building. This has come to be known as "sick building syndrome." A large number of other symptoms such as headache, fatigue, skin irritation, and peculiar odor and taste sensations have been reported.
Association
of Mycoplasmal Infections with Malignant Progression, Relapse and Stage In Breast
  Cancer Patients
by Garth L. Nicolson, PhD, President and Chief Scientific Officer, The Institute
of Molecular Medicine, Huntington Beach, California, who hypothesized that Reactive
Oxygen Species and other toxic molecules, released by intracellular bacteria,
could "play a role in the progression to malignancy." In their research
at the Institute, they found a highly statistically significant association
(probability of less than one in a thousand that there is NO association) between
"progression" (measured by relapse after surgery) and presence of
mycoplasmal infection(s). (Mycoplasmas are any of a group of small typically
parasitic bacteria that lack cell walls and sometimes cause diseases.) In these
breast cancer patients examination showed that the mycoplasmal infections were
inside the white blood cells (more than 50%).
. . . Reactive Oxygen Species and other toxic molecules, released by intracellular bacteria, could "play a role in the progression to malignancy." In their research at the Institute, they found a highly statistically significant association . . . between "progression" (measured by relapse after surgery) and presence of mycoplasmal infection(s).
Recalling the probability that reactive
oxygen species (ROC) are released by the mycoplasmal infections and that lipids
(fats) in cell membranes would be easily oxidized, Professor Nicolson and his
colleagues have used Lipid Replacement/Antioxidant Therapy to restore cell membranes
and to counteract the destructive actions of the ROC.

Chemo- and radiation therapy for cancer have many side effects including fatigue. The use of the Lipid Replacement/Antioxidant therapy has been found truly helpful in allowing the energy production in the cells to recommence.
Since the success of cytotoxic cancer therapy depends to some degree on free radical oxidation damage to cancer cells, lipid replacement plus antioxidants should not be administered at the same time of day as chemo- or radiotherapy. The primary use of lipid replacement plus antioxidants is to prevent damage to normal cellular structures, and this can be accomplished by administering the supplement at different times than the therapy to salvage normal cellular structures and diminish the adverse side effects of therapy.
The Effects of Chemicals on Pediatrics

by NOHA Honorary Member Doris Rapp, MD, FAAEM, Clinical Assistant Professor
Pediatrics SUNY - Emerita; author, Our Toxic World and many other books,
who gave us an eloquent exposition of the many health problems for children
from manmade chemicals. She pointed out the many common childhood exposures
around their homes - cleaning agents, clothing, cosmetics, home furnishings,
pesticides - how to recognize, and prevent their illnesses, including facing
up to parental exposures before the conception of the child.
"40 years ago, crop damage was 7%, NOW, it's 14%, in spite of US use of 2.7 billion pounds of increasingly toxic chemicals (only 1.3 billion pounds used in rest of world)."
"Chemicals harming our children
are found in our air, water, soil, and food. Of 80,000 USA chemicals plus 1500
more per year, only 10% are partially checked and only in healthy young men."

In regard to pesticides, "40
years ago, crop damage was 7%, NOW, it's 14%, in spite of US use of 2.7 billion
pounds of increasingly toxic chemicals (only 1.3 billion pounds used in rest
of world). That's 10 pounds person per year, 80% in foods and 20% in homes and
gardens." "Seventy-six baby foods contained sixteen different pesticides."
In a study of 96 preschool children in Seattle all but one had pesticide metabolites
in their urine. The family of this one child ate all organic food and never
used pesticides inside or outside their home. "If indoor pesticides are
used, child leukemia is up. If outdoor exposure too, risk is almost doubled!
If mothers also use, incidence is tripled."

"Fifty percent of pregnancies
end in a stillborn, a miscarriage, birth defects, or other health problems!
One pesticide exposure in the first 3 months of pregnancy can cause a 70% chance
of a stillborn. Pathologists don't routinely check for chemicals in stillbornseven
if asked. Look for clusters of certain illnesses and then look for chemicals
  in the area."

"Disposaable diapers contain
feminizing phthalates. Microwaved, plastic-bottled genetically engineered milk
or soy releases phthalates, which alters puberty and sex development, and attitudes."

"Ask yourselfwhy so much
asthma? Childhood asthma [is the] leading cause [of] hospital admissions and
school absenteeism, more than infection. One eighth [of all US children] have
  it."

"Damage from environmental chemical
exposures appears to be inherited. If pregnant rats are exposed to xenobiotic
[foreign to life] feminizing chemicals, they can have reduced fertility in the
next 4 generations of males. What about exposed humans?"

"Many Viet Nam veteran's children and Vietnamese are not normal in intelligence or developmenttransgenerational changes have occurred in the DNA of the sperm producing tissues. Iraq babies now have more birth defects than ever before. [Is the cause] uranium [or] other pollutants?"
. . . much careful advice [is given], for example, get a good water filtergroundwater is contaminated with many chemicals, chlorine and fluorine are often added to water systems. All these chemicals should be removed, as much as possible! Buy organic food, avoid plastic food and water containers, never use pesticides inside or outside your home, object to, for example, mosquito spraying, insist on being warned, if the spraying continues, and protect your family as well as you cannever letting your children go out and play in the sprayed grass.
"Diseases like cancer can be
passed generation to generation without a mutation. Another molecule, like a
methyl group [one carbon with three hydrogen atoms], gets attached to the DNA
molecule. This changes the behavior of the gene but not the gene itself. It's
theorized cancer might be caused by a grandmother's exposure to a toxic chemical."

Dr. Rapp gives much careful advice, for example, get a good water filtergroundwater is contaminated with many chemicals, chlorine and fluorine are often added to water systems.

The Importance of Iodine in Breast Cancer
by Sherri J. Tenpenny, DO, President and CEO, OsteoMed II, gave us a fine write-up
of the importance of iodine for breast health and also for children's intelligence.
Of course, iodine is essential for the functioning of the thyroid gland, which
is our master gland for regulating our metabolism.

Dr. Tenpenny has studied the details of Codex Alimentarius. She took the time allotted for her lecture to tell us about the drastic controls on foods and supplements, which are spelled out in the Codex.
Breast Cancer:
Early Detection through Thermography and Prevention through Nutrition
by Allan D. Lieberman, MD, FAAEM, and colleagues, Center for Occupational &
Environmental Medicine, North Charleston, South Carolina, who explained thermography,
which can give early diagnosis of a woman's breast cancer, giving time for nutritional
intervention to prevent the development of the cancer.
Thermography [basically] involves an infrared camera, which can detect breast areas of increased activity. Cold mits are put on, so that normal tissue becomes less active and an area that might be pre-cancerous will appear warmer.
Dr. Lieberman's colleagues explained
thermography. Basically, it involves an infrared camera, which can detect breast
areas of increased activity. Cold mits are put on, so that normal tissue becomes
less active and an area that might be pre-cancerous will appear warmer. "Thermography
is able to pick up changes in the breast anywhere from 6 to 10 years before
mammography." In both tests there are false positives and false negatives,
which must be taken into account.

This gentle, non-invasive test can
give ample time for Dr. Lieberman's excellent nutritional protocol, including:

Dr. Lieberman presents fascinating
research on the value of these nutrients and on their important role "in
  preventing and reversing breast cancer."
